I mentioned something earlier this week about doing a case study on design that works when it shouldn’t. And really, there are a lot of examples that I could use. Myspace for instance.
But something else really caught my attention this week that preceded attention on that post. If you were salivating about that for some reason, you should probably go fill up a glass of Orangina.
Doors!
You read right. This post is all about doors. I’m not crazy. Maybe a little. I’ll be taking a look at how doors relate to usability design. Again, not crazy, just keep reading.
Doors have much in common with the web as we’ve created it. Hell, I’d say they account for most of what we see on the web. Links! Links are the very fibers that connect the web. And that’s all second knowledge for most anyone reading this now.

As a freelancer, and granted, anyone really, it’s crucially important that we stay as fit and healthy as possible. Big corporations have made billion dollar businesses based on this fact.
We eat our daily vitamin supplements (Flintstones anyone?), we follow our healthy dieting plans, and I bet it’s a good estimate that 1 in 8 people carry a bottle of Aspirin/Ibuprofen/Tylenol with them wherever they go. Just in case they might need it to ward off that oncoming pain.
Who could possibly work the rest of the day with a mild headache?
I had a discussion with my mom the other week about obesity in America. She started telling me about this woman she had seen walking around town nearly everyday during the last few weeks. This woman was also very large, rotund, whatever you’d like to call it. I’m not going to try to be politically correct.

I’ve been quiet the last few days, although not without reason!
Mostly because I’ve been working on a new blog I just launched, among other small freelance jobs. Those small ones really add up?
Regardless, you can check out the new blog at ecobambino.net. Be warned though, it has nothing to do with freelancing!
Eco Bambino is exactly what it says: a blog about keeping that little bambino of yours as eco-friendly and organic as possible. So if you’re a mom or dad of little ones, head on over and subscribe to get all the great tips and product suggestions that will be coming forth.
That one will be posted on more frequently, but if only for the reason of shorter posts! I try to keep the ones here fairly lengthy content-wise so as to maximize on quality rather than quantity of posts.
Later this week I’ll be taking a look into why design works when it looks like it shouldn’t. This will be a weekly case study. Though the application is web design, it’ll usually be taking principles from products we often see in the store.
In part 1 I gave you the first three tips from Indiana Jones. They went like this:
- It’s not who you know, it’s who knows you
- Protect your assets, like a large bobcat protects her cubs
- Community service as a business asset
Now’s time for the next three!

I’m very excited for the new Jones movie, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I’ve re watched the first three, three times over the last week. It might be a little bit of overkill!
As such, I’ve been noticing how much Jones’ work compares to my own as a freelancer. This is part one of the top 6 freelancing tips, courtesy of Indiana Jones.

I finally picked up my copy of Four Hour Work Week by Tim Ferris a few weeks ago. Since then I’ve read through it a few times.
In conjuction with Tim’s elimination rule, he presents the 80/20 principle, otherwise known as the pareto principle.
The Pareto principle states that, for many events, 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. It is a common rule of thumb in business.

SEO is an interesting science; one which I’ve yet to completely understand. It might as well be an alchemy to me.
I was checking my google analytics last night when I noticed that I was getting hits from google for the keyword “coloring inside of lines”. It turns out that I’m ranking #7 on the first page for this keyword.
Granted, there isn’t a lot of competition for the ranking. Really, there’s almost none with only 855,000 results and no ads to be seen for miles. I’m assuming that there isn’t a lot of valuable traffic going for this keyword. I suppose you could write an ebook on how to color inside of the lines although who doesn’t know how?

I’m glad to finally have established my personal blog. I’ve started and stopped on this project several times before so it’s a great feeling to have finally finished. Please, yell at me, no, scream when you find a bug. Really, I want you to cause there will be some.
It’s been nervewracking the last few hours finishing up things here and there as well as writing this post. Although this story requires some back-tracking.
Last night I was eating dinner with my sister, now 16 years old. She had her driving test scheduled for this morning. Thank god she passed. She failed her permit test the first time so I was relieved.
